Good ole BrownRandy waxing philosophically about something or other. So, why BrownRandy? Well the honest answer is simple; in the entertainment world, it seems that Randy Brown is a dadgum common name. There is a least one other Texas based singer/songwriter named Randy Brown, a soul singer, a basketball star and a TV reverend. That is just the ones that have been brought to my attention. Given that information and added the fact that anyone reading this page is either VERY intelligent or bored, I think you can infer the rest and the why of BrownRandy.
OK, so this page (the about page) contains all the semi-serious, plumped up, hyperbole and B.S., that us artistic types use use to impress you guys enough to weasel a few of your hard earned bucks out of your wallet to attend our shows or buy product (CD’s, T-shirt, key rings, bumper stickers and stuff). Though to be perfectly honest, barring money a little awe will do quite well, thank you. Be aware that this is folk/americana/acoustic music we are talking about, where our success is measured by our ability to make a rent payment. This is the very pinnacle of folk music super stardom; to be self supporting. So the lies and half-truths follow:
I am a lifetime performing songwriter/philosopher and 2008 independent presidential candidate (truth is I really didn’t campaign but it was so cool to have my own bumper stickers). I was a regional songwriting finalist at Kerrville Folk Festival 1995 and also in 2009. I was the 2007 New Traditions Songwriting winner (Nacogdoches, Texas), 2009 Texas Independent Music Expo (TIME) songwriting winner, 2011 Honorable Mention at Rocky Mtn Folk Festival, 2011 semi-finalist for the Texas Independent Music Expo (TIME) and have been totally ignored by more songwriting competitions than you can shake a stick at (I have the rejection letters to prove it). I was a founding member of the now defunct but still legendary folk, funk, jazz and swing trio Jealousy Motel. Whose, two CDs contain 19 of my original songs. I currently write a monthly column for an East Texas music/arts paper, Piney Woods Live, called the “B” Side of Music, about art & music. I also speak to various groups about songwriting and the music business. In one sentence my music could be described as: “Charles Darwin meets Guy Clark and Van Morrison at an MIT BBQ in honor of Albert Einstein’s birthday.” I think that about covers it.
